How to Clean and Maintain Your Acrylic Display Coffee Table to Keep it Shining for Years

Time : 2025-11-28

acrylic display coffee table

Acrylic and glass look very similar, but the two materials are quite different. Treating an acrylic coffee table like you would glass can easily cause problems. Acrylic coffee tables are made of plexiglass, possessing glass-like transparency yet being extremely lightweight. However, if you treat them like glass, they will quickly become damaged. Never wipe them with paper towels or glass cleaner. These will leave tiny scratches and spiderweb-like "cracks" on the surface, permanently making it hazy. With proper care, it can remain shiny and new for years, making your coffee beans or books look like they're on display under gallery lights.

Acrylic Coffee Tables vs. Glass Coffee Tables: Why Your Old Habits Don't Work

Glass is resistant to ammonia, but acrylic is very susceptible to its corrosion. Glass cleaners, nail polish remover, and even strong kitchen degreasers—these can all cause acrylic to swell and crack, eventually resulting in a frosted texture. Remember: Don't risk using any cleaning agents unless the bottle says "for acrylic." Never use steel wool or rough sponges—they will scratch deep cracks in seconds.

Proper Cleaning (60 Seconds Only)

→ First, blow away dust with compressed air (or gently rinse with water).

→ Mix regular dish soap with warm water.

→ Wipe in straight lines with a clean microfiber cloth; do not use circles.

→ Rinse thoroughly; residual dish soap will only attract more dirt.

Repairing Scratches

Minor Scratches (Can't be scraped off with a fingernail):

Apply acrylic polish to a microfiber cloth and rub in small circles.

Wash away any residue with soapy water.

→ Do not use car polish—it's too harsh.

Deeper Scratches (Can't be scraped off with a fingernail):

Wet 800-grit wet sandpaper and apply it to the scratch.

Brush the scratch only in gentle, straight lines.

Use progressively higher grit sandpaper (1000 → 1500 → 2000 → 3000), rinsing thoroughly after each use.

Polish to restore shine.

→ Note: This method can abrade the material and is only suitable for thicker tabletops.

Prevent dust accumulation

Acrylic materials generate static electricity, attracting dust. After cleaning:

Spray with an anti-static spray.

Gently wipe with a dry microfiber cloth.

Acrylic Coffee Table Precautions

High Temperatures: Always use coasters when placing hot cups. Otherwise, permanent white indentations will be left on the tabletop.

️Sunlight: Avoid direct sunlight. Even "UV-resistant" acrylic will yellow under direct sunlight.

Fabric: Paper towels will abrade the tabletop like sandpaper. Please use a dedicated microfiber cloth (do not use fabric softener when washing).

Sticky residue? Do this:

→ Dampen a cloth with a small amount of mineral oil (test on an inconspicuous area first).

→ Wait 20 seconds to soften the sticky residue.

→ Gently wipe, then wash the stain with soapy water.

→ Do not scratch—acrylic scratches more easily than butter.
